MCA forum on "Tysons: Past, Present & Future"

Published on 11/16/2017
Following Supervisor Foust's opening remarks, County staff briefed the audience on the current status of Tysons and how Fairfax County is addressing the challenges that lie ahead, including with regard to development, parks and athletic fields, public facilities, and transportation.  Over 80 people were in attendance.

In the hour-long Q and A that followed the presentations, our members and the public focused on concerns in four areas:

o  The exponential increases in traffic on our local roads during rush hour, which make getting into and out of our neighborhoods extremely difficult.
o   Ensuring that Tysons does have a central park, as called for in the Park Guidelines for Tysons, and that all 20 athletic fields to serve Tysons are built within Tysons;
o   Ensuring that the monetary contribution rates for athletic fields and public facilities accurately reflect the costs of land and construction of fields and facilities and are updated annually; and
o   Ensuring that schools are built to serve children who will live in Tysons in the future.

We asked that County officials keep us posted as they investigate possible approaches to mitigate the congestion and to encourage Tysons' employees, particularly those from Maryland and the District, to use main roads and the Beltway and stay off of our neighborhood streets.  We also indicated support for encouraging expansion of capacity at the American Legion Bridge to reduce the bottleneck that results in Maryland drivers deciding to use our neighborhood streets to minimize their time on the Beltway.  County officials stated that they are working with a developer to secure a proffer for a central park and that the monetary contribution rates for fields should be updated in early 2018.  We asked that the rates continue to be updated annually, not only for athletic fields but also for public facilities, since meeting goals in these areas very well may require the County to acquire land in Tysons.  Finally, on school needs, County officials stated that they annually update their facility needs, based on information provided by the School system and School Board.
