Matters of Interest

Fairfax County staff continues to reject using the Route 28 the cost-sharing formula of 25% public - 75% private to pay for Tysons transportation improvements and continues to argue that Fairfax taxpayers should bear the brunt of those costs.

On Oct. 13, 2011, MCA raised serious questions regarding the staff analysis and again argued for using the Route 28 precedent for determining the taxpayer and developer contributions to providing the public infrastructure, including for transportation, required for an urbanized Tysons Corner. Click through to read the County staff analysis and MCA rebuttal.

The County still needs to decide how to ensure that development in Tysons Corner not grow faster than the infrastructure required to support it, and how to apportion the likely $2B+ tab for that infrastructure between the developers and the public. Whatever the public portion of the costs turns out to be, those costs undoubtedly will be borne by all the taxpayers in the County, and not just those in the Tysons Corner area. Dear Neighbors:

I want to extend my wishes for a happy, healthy and prosperous 2012 to all of you. Members of McLean Citizens Association, it's time for us to pay our $15 annual dues. This is our only source of income and most of it is used to communicate with members and to support advocacy efforts made on your behalf. It would also be wonderful if you could persuade a friend or neighbor to join as well.

This year will be another busy one for the MCA. We will be analyzing and commenting on the budget proposals from Fairfax County and its public schools; working toward resolution of the Community Center's budget surplus and related expansion plans; protecting residents' interests on Falls Church water rates; and working as a member of the Tysons Partnership, with the landowners and other stakeholders, to ensure the redevelopment of Tysons protects the interests of McLean and provides benefits to everyone in Fairfax County.

Our efforts to research issues, debate them in committees and among board members and then advocate them continue to produce results. For example, recently, Delegate Mark Keam, who represents part of the McLean side of Tysons, has introduced legislation to address the $200 million annual taxpayer subsidy to overweight trucks, which has been a priority of the MCA for several years. We have been working Delegate Keam's office on this legislation.

Sincerely,

Rob Jackson
President
